Russian Government To Ban Same-sex Marriage

JAKARTA - Members of the Russian parliament have submitted a Draft Law (RUU) that prohibits same-sex marriage. Discussions related to the bill took place several weeks after the referendum on constitutional changes was held in Russia.

In the bill, Russia will only define marriages that can be entered into between a man and a woman. The marriage bill is also in line with what the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, is fighting for, who is widely known as a devout Orthodox Christian.

Launching Channel News Asia, Putin, who has always been holding hands with the Russian Orthodox Church, has tried to distance his citizens from liberal Western values, including same-sex marriage. So, Putin promised not to legalize same-sex marriage while he was in the Kremlin.

Not only that, the bill also states a de facto prohibition that will make it difficult for future government candidates to legalize same-sex marriage. As a result, the bill on the prohibition of same-sex marriage will be passed by the Lower House of the Russian Parliament, the Duma, in the near future.

However, the bill does not only contain the prohibition of the same sex. In the new regulation, the owner of the policy also prohibits same-sex couples from adopting children, which is an important point of the bill that will be passed soon.

As revealed by Elena Mizulina, the ban on adoption of same-sex couples will also extend to those who are transgender. Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the legislation prohibiting same-sex marriage was part of the formalization of the new Russian Law after a constitutional referendum.
