JAKARTA - Haiti on Thursday asked the United Nations Security Council to help investigate the assassination of President Jovenel Moise, as well as to support security amid the country's political crisis, said UN envoy Helen La Lime.

Speaking to reporters after closed-door council talks, La Lime criticized the deadly attack as a cowardly act by the command.

La Lime said the investigation to determine who was behind the leader of the Caribbean nation could take weeks.

The UN Security Council met against the backdrop of Haiti's deepening political and security crisis. Police have killed four killers and arrested six others in the hunt for those who carried out the attack on President Jovenel Moise's residence, La Lime said.

“Haiti made a request for assistance in this investigation from international authorities. It is important that this request is taken seriously", La Lime said cited from The National News, Friday, July 9.

"The key thing is that in the next two weeks we really have to work in the most effective way possible, to ensure this investigation moves forward and the perpetrators of these horrific crimes are brought to justice".

La Lime further explained, Haiti's Ambassador to the United Nations Antonio Rodrigue also asked the council to provide additional security assistance, although it was not clear what exactly they were pursuing.

It is known that the United Nations currently has a political envoy mission to help Haiti build government institutions and hold free and fair elections, which will begin in September. The UN staff based in Haiti may have to become "more dynamic" in responding to the crisis, La Lime said.

Previously, the UN peacekeepers were deployed to Haiti in 2004 after an uprising led to the overthrow and exile of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. The UN troops were also deployed after the 2010 earthquake and the mission closed in 2019.
