TNI Holds A Number Of Security Operations In Papua, Hopefully The Situation Gets Better

JAKARTA - The head of the TNI Strategic Intelligence Agency (Kabais) Lieutenant General TNI Joni Supriyanto stated that the TNI Headquarters conducted a number of security operations in Papua to provide security for the community.

"Operation is still active until today, hopefully, it provides a better situation," Joni said at the Working Meeting (Raker) with the DPR RI Special Committee (Pansus) in Jakarta, as reported by Antara, Friday, May 28.

Joni explained that the operations included border security operations which were carried out throughout the year. The operation was carried out along the border from Jayapura to Merauke. A total of 96 security posts with the support of around 3,210 members of the TNI.

Subsequently, the operation of vulnerable areas was carried out in several places under the control of the Cenderawasih Military Commander. Then there is the operation of securing the outer islands, where there are two outer islands in Papua which are carried out by marines, as well as air transport operations for logistics distribution in remote areas.

"There is also a law enforcement operation in collaboration with the police, namely the Nemangkawi operation," said Joni.

The Special Committee for the second amendment to the Draft Law Number 21 of 2001 regarding Special Autonomy in Papua Province held a working meeting to hear input from the TNI Commander, Head of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), and Head of the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas).

The Chairperson of the Special Committee, Komarudin Watubun, stated that the Special Autonomy (Otsus) of Papua which was granted through Law Number 21 of 2001 has been implemented for nearly 20 years.

The Papua Special Autonomy Bill has been included in the 2021 Prolegnas. The Special Autonomy Committee for Papua listens to the defense policies that have been implemented in Papua in connection with the existence of Law Number 21 of 2001, in addition to hearing views regarding the current security situation in Papua and the estimated situation in Papua after the implementation of the bill becomes Constitution.
