Minister Of Health Introduces GAVI Vaccine Alliance Leader To Prabowo

Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin invited the leadership of the vaccine alliance, Manuel Barroso, to get acquainted with President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta.

Minister of Health Budi said Barroso was the President of the European Commission from 2004 to 2014, now serving as Chairman of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI).

"This is the former President of the European Union, now the chairman of GAVI, who helped Indonesia with more than 100 million doses of vaccine," he said introducing Barroso to reporters as reported by ANTARA, Friday, December 6.

He invited Barroso to get acquainted with President Prabowo Subianto, as well as discuss a number of health issues at the meeting.

"Now I want to go before the President, coincidentally there is a meeting. It's just about an audience from GAVI. It's about introducing it," he said explaining the purpose of the meeting.

Since 2016, Barroso has served as Chairman and Director of non-executive Goldman Sachs International, as an investment banking firm, securities, and global investment management providing various financial services.

Meanwhile, GAVI is a global alliance that increases access to vaccines in developing countries to protect children from preventable disease. GAVI supports the procurement of affordable vaccines, strengthens the immunization system, and cooperates with global partners to expand vaccination coverage on an ongoing basis.

GAVI has played a significant role in supporting vaccination programs in Indonesia. Since its arrival in the early 2000s, GAVI has helped increase access to vaccines that are important to prevent infectious diseases, especially in remote areas.

Through collaboration with the Indonesian government, health organizations, and global partners, GAVI supports financing, procurement, and distribution of vaccines to protect millions of children from disease, such ascampus, rubella, hepatitis B, and pneumonia.

In addition, GAVI also contributes to strengthening the national immunization system, including the launch of new vaccines and logistical readiness.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, GAVI played a role in providing vaccines through the COVAX initiative, ensuring that Indonesia could access vaccines evenly and affordablely. GAVI support accelerates the achievement of national immunization targets and contributes to improving public health in Indonesia.
