JAKARTA - Land Rover is recalling 250,857 SUVs because the driver's airbag may not inflate in a collision. Affected models include the Defender, Discovery, and Range Rover produced from 2020 to 2026.

Citing a report by Car and Driver, quoted Tuesday, June 30, the recall is listed in a document filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA, the United States highway safety agency.

The problem is with the driver's airbag clockspring connector. Clockspring is a component that connects the electrical circuit on the steering wheel, including for airbags. This component can experience corrosion over time.

If it is rusted, the resistance in the airbag electrical circuit can increase and interfere with the airbag expansion function.

The NHTSA document says all 250,857 SUVs on the recall list are expected to have the problematic connector.

The recall covers some 2020-2026 Land Rover Defender models, 2021-2026 Discovery models, and some 2022-2026 Range Rover models.

Even so, technical analysis found that the airbag warning light would turn on first. The warning is estimated to appear at least 300 to 400 miles before the connector corrodes to the point that the airbag cannot inflate.

At the time the recall documents were filed, Land Rover had not received any reports of injuries or accidents related to the issue.

Vehicle owners affected will be notified by letter starting August 7. They will be asked to take their cars to authorized dealers.

The repair is done at no cost. The dealer will apply protective lubricant to the connector terminal to prevent corrosion.

According to the recall document, Land Rover has also improved the production process by adding the same lubricant during assembly.

Owners who want to make sure if their vehicles are affected can check the vehicle identification number through the NHTSA website.
