JAKARTA - Russia attacks energy infrastructure in northern Ukraine through missile and drone strikes. The attack caused heavy fires in the western part of the country.

Ukrainian troops shot down three ballistic missiles and 25 of the 26 drones launched in attacks in nine regions of the country, Ukrainian air force commanders said.

Regional officials in the northeastern region of Sumy bordering Russia said the energy facility was affected, causing power outages in 72 settlements with more than 18,500 customers.

Energy workers rushed to repair the damage, the local government said through a Telegram messaging application reported by Reuters, Tuesday, August 20.

Ukraine's energy facilities have been bombarded almost every day over the past six months as the war continues following Russia's massive invasion in February 2022.

Ukraine bought electricity from neighboring countries in the European Union but was not enough to close the deficit. Power outages are announced regularly during busy hours of night consumption.

It was reported that industrial facilities were attacked in the western region of Ternopil during the latest bombings, and fuel reservoirs were hit.

Ukrainian television showed massive black smoke rising in Ternopil, and local governments urged people to stay indoors.

Viktor Ustenko, deputy head of the Ternopil regional government, said more than 90 firefighters were involved in efforts to extinguish the fire.

"The situation is completely under control," said Ustenko.

The attack on Kyiv was successfully driven without causing major damage or casualties, city officials said.
