JAKARTA - Construction of the Balkhash nuclear power plant (NPP) will begin next year. The consortium for the construction of the first NPP in Kazakhstan is led by the Russian state atomic energy company, Rosatom.
Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said his country's decision was right in building the nuclear power plant.
"Kazakhstan is the world's leading uranium producer and has nuclear infrastructure. Therefore, the choice of nuclear power plants is absolutely right. The decision of the people during the historic referendum in 2024, in essence, is civilizational," he said, quoted by Tass on Wednesday, July 1.
Tokayev added that with the nuclear power plant, Kazakhstan will be guaranteed in energy sovereignty and have a reliable foundation for the future energy-related digital economy.
The decision to choose Rosatom to build the country's first nuclear power plant was made by the Government of Kazakhstan in 2025.
In May 2026, during Russian President Vladimir Putin's state visit to Kazakhstan, Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev said the Russian state-owned company he heads hopes to begin construction of the Balkhash nuclear power plant in 2027.
Kazakhstan's Atomic Energy Agency later said it intends to begin construction next year.
