Russia denounced Western Ukrainian allies at the UN Security Council on Tuesday for not condemning Kyiv's attack on Russian territory in Kursk, accusing Ukrainian forces of killing civilians and questioning the purpose of the cross-border attack.
Thousands of Ukrainian troops began a sudden attack a week ago, a move that Russian President Vladimir Putin said was aimed at improving Kyiv's negotiating position, ahead of possible negotiations and slowing the progress of Russian troops along the front lines.
"We have not heard a word of criticism for this action from the West sponsor of the Kyiv regime who continues to cover up the heinous crimes of their dolls," Deputy Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Dmitry Polyanskiy told a board meeting.
"I would be grateful for the explanation of how targeting civilians could intentionally help the purpose of thwarting attacks on Ukrainian territory, given the fact that there are no military objects or infrastructure in the region," he said.
Ukraine's allies on the UN Security Council, including the United States, France, and Britain, remain steadfast in supporting Kyiv during an informal meeting of the council held by Russia. They did not mention Kursk attacks.
"We will not recognize the attacker as a victim," said senior Slovenian diplomat Klemen Ponikvar, one of several members accusing Russia of being hypocritical, double-standard, and a waste of Security Council time.
Western Ukrainian supporters - who want to avoid war escalation, are becoming a direct confrontation between Russia and the US-led NATO - said they had not received advance warnings about the Ukrainian attacks that have carved out parts of Russia.
During an informal meeting of the council, American, British and French diplomats filed charges against Russia for violations of international humanitarian law and human rights in Ukraine.
"There is no need to question which countries have committed many well-documented atrocities, including war crimes and crimes against humanity, in the territory of Ukraine's sovereignty," said US diplomat Caleb Pine.
