PON 2024 Aceh And North Sumatra, BMKG Will Update The Weather On The Special Channel

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) will update weather forecasts through special channels that can be accessed by cellphones during the 2024 National Sports Week (PON) in Aceh and North Sumatra (North Sumatra).

"The weather information in the PON 2024 special channel must have been prepared based on the website, so it can be accessed directly at each venue," said BMKG Deputy for Climatology Ardhasena Sopahelukakan in Jakarta, Monday, August 5, as reported by Antara.

According to him, weather forecast information will continue to be updated every three hours for each sports cluster competed in Aceh and North Sumatra starting from before the opening, opening, to closing of PON.

Including, he continued, in it is maritime weather information that contains around water weather, wave height, tides, wind direction forecasts and speeds, to support the implementation of paragliding, rowing, and so on.

As in the 2021 PON Papua and the 2018 Asean Games in Jakarta-Palembang, he continued, weather information services presented by the BMKG channel are very important to determine the smooth activities and safety of athletes as well as officials because the implementation of the 2024 PON coincides with the transition from the end of the dry season to evenly rainy season, so that extreme weather can appear at any time.

Based on data from the recapitulation of the BMKG climatology team in the dry season for the June-July 2024 period, the maximum hotspots in Aceh and North Sumatra can generally reach more than 35-36.6 degrees Celsius.

While referring to data from the first semester of 2024, the probabilistic rainfall in general is in the medium (100-300 mm/month) to very high (>300 mm/month) criteria reinforced by atmospheric phenomena such as Rossby Equatorial waves, MJO.

"We want success so it must be prepared properly. But for more technical details, it will be explained in detail ahead of the start of the event by the PON organizing committee," he said.

PON 2024 is scheduled to take place from 8-20 September 2024 with Aceh and North Sumatra as hosts. The event became special because it became the first PON to be held in two provinces since the 1948 edition, also as the first PON followed by the most provinces, namely 38 provinces, including new autonomous areas and also added the presence of the capital city of the archipelago (IKN).

Reporting from the website of the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) the implementation of PON in Aceh will compete in 33 sports, 42 sports disciplines, 510 match numbers, and it is estimated that 5,636 athletes and 2,752 officials will participate.

Meanwhile, PON in North Sumatra competes in 34 sports, 46 sports disciplines, 602 match numbers, and is expected to be followed by 6,281 athletes and 3,140 officials.
