JAKARTA - Pakistan arrested a leader of Al-Qaeda, Amin ul Haq, who is on the UN sanctions list. Amin ul Haq is said to be a close colleague of Osama Bin Laden, the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks in the United States (US).

The arrest of Pakistan's first Al-Qaeda leader in recent years comes as counter-terrorism (CTD) departments in Myanmar's most populous province register a legal case against Haq, accusing him of planning to sabotage key installations there.

The statement did not identify any definite plans or installations.

"In a significant breakthrough in the fight against terrorism, CTD, in collaboration with intelligence agencies, managed to arrest Amin ul Haq, a senior Al-Qaeda leader," a department spokesman said in a statement.

"His name is on the UN terrorist list," he added.

Pakistan's domestic (domestic) ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In the list dated January 2001, the UN sanctions panel against ISIL (Da'esh) and Al-Qaeda identified the man arrested as Amin Muhammad ul Haq Saam Khan, and called him the security coordinator bin Laden.

He is on the list because of his relationship with Al-Qaeda bin Laden or the Taliban, which contributes or supports activities such as "packaging, selling or transferring related weapons and equipment" to them, the panel said.
