Reducing Tensions, Commission I Of The DPR Asks The Government To Overcome OPM Through A Socio-Cultural Approach

JAKARTA - Chairman of Commission I DPR RI Meutya Hafid assessed that the Government needs to optimize its socio-cultural approach in overcoming the increasingly anarchic actions of the Free Papua Organization (OPM).

"The government needs to reopen dialogues with OPM groups to find peaceful solutions. Inclusive and transparent negotiations can help reduce tensions," Meutya said in a statement received in Jakarta, Friday, July 19, quoted by Antara.

He assessed that investment in infrastructure development, education, and community welfare could help reduce security instability in Papua.

Related to this, he said that Commission I of the DPR appreciated the development that had been carried out by the Government in Papua quickly, rapidly, and significantly in the last 10 years.

"Such development steps need to be continued to take sides with the Papuan people," he said.

Furthermore, Meutya asked the Government to focus on resolving conflicts and restoring stability in Papua.

"We are concerned about the incessant OPM actions that have been carried out more and more often. We ask the Government to immediately take concrete steps and focus on resolving conflicts and security stability in Papua," he said.

He asked the TNI-Polri apparatus to be able to overcome security disturbances that occurred in Papua because the security of the local community is a top priority.

"We want to ensure the presence of security forces to protect civilians in order to overcome security threats. Strengthening the presence of the TNI and Polri in the area is very important," he said.

Meutya also criticized the OPM action that burned the school building. He reminded that the right to education for Papuan children to get a decent education must be prioritized.

For this reason, he asked the government and officials to ensure security for children in Papua when studying at school.

"We hope that the Government can guarantee that children in Papua can get education safely and comfortably without intimidation and disturbances," hoped Meutya.

Previously, Tuesday, July 16, the Battalion Task Force RK 753/AVR managed to shoot dead three members of the Free Papua Organization (OPM) of the Teranus Enumbi group in the Karubate village area, Muara District, Puncak Jaya Regency, Papua.

The prosecution of the TNI apparatus sparked provocation that incited the public so that anarchism occurred in the form of destroying public facilities and burning of TNI-Polri officers.

The Head of the Puncak Jaya Police, Adjunct Senior Commissioner of Police Kuswara, said that as a result of the riot, four people were injured and a resident died, namely Abdulah Jaelani (30) who was injured by sharp objects.
