Foreign Minister Retno Will Raise Support For Palestinian State Recognition In AMM Next Week 57

JAKARTA - Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi will garner support for the recognition of the Palestinian State, while attending a meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers in Laos next week.

The Director General of ASEAN Cooperation at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sidharto R. Suryodipuro, said that the 57th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) will be held in Vientiane, Laos on 21-27 July.

A number of issues surrounding ASEAN will be discussed in this meeting, including the South China Sea issue, the conflict in Myanmar and ASEAN relations with a number of partners.

"The Foreign Minister will start attending from Tuesday to Saturday next week and is scheduled to attend around 19 meetings," he explained in a press statement in Jakarta Friday, July 19.

"In discussing regional and international issues, the Foreign Minister will garner support for efforts to problem Palestine and the recognition of the Palestinian state," he said.

The AMM event this time will also continue to discuss the implementation of the Five Point Consensus (5PC) regarding the conflict in Myanmar, as well as the implementation of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP).

In addition, ASEAN Foreign Ministers will also hold meeting partners from Australia, Canada, China, the European Union, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea to the United Kingdom and the United States.

Regarding representatives of Myanmar in a meeting next week, Sidharto said he would be represented by non-political officials such as the previous meetings this year.

Previously, Myanmar's seats were left vacant even though member countries agreed Myanmar's participation in the meeting could only be held by non-political representatives, after Myanmar was deemed to have failed to implement the 5PC to overcome the crisis after the February 1, 2021 military coup.
