35 Dead Cows, Disnakkan Situbondo Sends Cow Blood Samples Indicated For PMK

SITUBONDO - The Department of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries (Disnakkan) of Situbondo Regency, East Java, has sent blood samples of cattle after 82 cows were found indicated to be exposed to mouth and nail disease (PMK) and 35 cows of them died.

"We have sent blood samples of cows suspected of being exposed to PMK to the Farma Veterinary Center in Surabaya to determine the cause of cattle indicated to be exposed to PMK and are still waiting for the results," said Head of the Situbondo Regency Livestock and Fisheries Service Ahmad Junaidi as reported by ANTARA, Friday, January 3.

According to him, animal health centers (puskeswans) continue to work to stop the spread of PMK in cattle by vaccinating and disseminating livestock to farmers.

At the end of December 2024, Junaidi said, Situbondo received an additional 1,500 doses of PMK vaccine from the Directorate General of Animal Husbandry of the Ministry of Agriculture and was distributed to six animal health centers.

"Animal health centers also treat sick cows and disseminate information to farmers to maintain the cleanliness of the cages, nor panic," said Junaidi.

Data from the Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Service of Situbondo Regency stated that 354,500 doses of PMK had been vaccinated, with details in 2022 as many as 101,700 doses, in 2023 as many as 167,000 doses, in 2024 as many as 83,800 doses.

Meanwhile, in the first week of January 2025 there were 1,500 sausages, and the PMK vaccine was prioritized for beef cattle and dairy cows.

Officers from the local Livestock Service also sprayed disinfectants in three animal markets, namely the Asembagus Animal Market, Besuki, and Sumberkolak including in cattle farmers' cages.

Farmers are advised to immediately report to the nearest animal health officer if there are cows that are sick, so they can be treated immediately and avoid death.
