Land Reduction In Jakarta Occurs Due To Industrial Activities

JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Water Resources Agency revealed that land subsidence occurred, one of which was due to industrial activities that required large amounts of groundwater.

This was conveyed by the Head of Rob Control and Coastal Development of the Jakarta Water Resources Service (SDA) Ciko Tricanescoro in an online event with the theme "Will Jakarta Sink?" which was broadcast on the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government website as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, July 17.

"The focus is in the north because all industrial centers are in the north. What makes land subsidence must be industrial activity, large ports. It needs quite a lot of ground water, that's why the phenomenon (land decline) occurs in the north," he said.

Meanwhile, the southern region, which is mostly settlements, the land water needs are more limited than in the northern region.

He referred to a study that stated that around 40-70 percent of the landwater reduction factor was caused by groundwater extraction. This means

as long as there are still people who take groundwater, land subsidence will continue to occur.

"We hope that in the future groundwater collection can be reduced," he said.

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov) will focus on areas where land subsidence has occurred, one of which is by building a monitoring station. This effort is expected to control the decline in land in the area.

"We also have a monitoring station, which will continue to grow. Now we only have seven tools. Later we can add other tools," he said.

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government also plans to add units that plunge into controlling parties who take groundwater by violating the rules, as well as groundwater-free zones.

"In the future, there will be a lot of groundwater-free zoning along with PAM roads. Then we continue to provide protection on the coast and InshaAllah Jakarta will not sink," he said.
