JAKARTA - Israeli Chief of Staff Defense Forces (IDF) Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi said the decision on whether or not to resign, after failing to prevent last year's October Hamas attack, would be decided after the purpose of war was achieved.

He said in Sunday's press conference discussing various topics on the IDF, since the latest conflict in Gaza broke out on October 7, 2023.

"I've been on the IDF for almost 40 years. There wasn't a single moment in my job that required me to hold on to the chair. I'm currently busy with the tasks: disbanding Hamas, repatriating the hostages, creating security for residents at the border," said Lt. Gen. Halevi, quoted by The Times of Israel July 15.

"I have expressed my responsibility on several occasions, and these words also have a practical meaning, very clear to me," he added, implying that he was seriously considering resigning.

"We are not leaving our duties halfway through, when we complete the task, I will make a decision," he stressed.

Responding to the ongoing investigation into failures before, during and after the October 7 attacks, Lt. Gen. Halevi said there were no aspects of IDF activity that would not be the subject of an in-depth investigation, including "the senior IDF leadership and my own behavior."

Lt. Gen. Halevi added that investigations have so far revealed a number of failures and great courage of IDF soldiers

"Every heroic action they commit belongs to themselves. In every mistake they make, I have a role," he concluded.
