One Month Of Operation, West Jakarta Police Unload 23 Online Omzet Gambling Cases Rp200 Billion

JAKARTA - A total of 23 reports of online gambling cases have been uncovered by the West Jakarta Metro Police for the past month from June 8 to July 11, 2024. From this disclosure, 29 people consisting of 17 players and 12 telemarketing were arrested.

West Jakarta Metro Police Chief Kombes M Syahduddi said, from the disclosure of this online gambling case, officers confiscated a number of evidences of 30 cellphones, 6 CPU units of computer equipment, 6 monitoring units, 7 keyboard units, 6 mouse, 13 ATM cards, and 1 airsoft gun unit.

"There is evidence of 1 airsoft gun unit. Then related to the disclosure of the case, investigators found that online gambling is an international syndicate of the Cambodian network," said Kombes Syahduddi when confirmed, Friday, July 12.

During its operation, this online gambling network has earned hundreds of billions of turnover.

"The total circulation of money over the last 3 months is around Rp. 200 billion in several accounts in Cambodia," he said.

The most prominent online gambling case is in Neo Soho's apartment, Tanjung Duren Selatan Village, Grogol Petamburan District, West Jakarta. From this crime scene, the police arrested 7 suspects.

The first suspect is AE (39) who acts as the person in charge of online gambling activities from this group.

The second suspect is FAF (26) acting as hackers on online gambling sites. The third suspect is YGP (20), acting as a hacker.

The fourth suspect is FH (21) acting as a hacker. The fifth suspect is GF, who also acts as a hacker. Then the sixth suspect is FAP (19) who acts as a hacker.

The seventh suspect is MHP (41), a resident of Kalideres West Jakarta who acts as the owner of an account that accommodates money from online gambling.

From the disclosure of this case, investigators secured several pieces of evidence, including 6 CPU units, 6 monitor units, 7 keyboard units, 6 mouse, 8 cellphones, and 1 airsoft gun unit.

The arrests of the perpetrators began with public reports. Then investigators carried out cyber patrols and investigations that led to gambling activities in an apartment in Grogol Petamburan District.

On Thursday, July 4, 2024 at around 16.00 WIB, West Jakarta Metro Police Satreskrim investigators secured an online gambling center in the apartment and arrested 6 suspects. After the development was carried out, investigators found the accounts used by the suspects in carrying out their actions.

The owner of the account in the name of MHP has also been secured and named a suspect.

The modus operandi carried out by a network of online gambling players in apartments in the Grogol Petamburan area is that they have been carrying out their actions since August 2023, by looking for websites belonging to government agencies or educational institutions with a weak security system.

The perpetrators then added or used the subdomain of the website, known as defaming.

"Based on the perpetrators' confessions, around 855 websites were successfully hacked, consisting of 500 websites belonging to local government agencies (.go.id) and 355 websites belonging to educational institutions (.ac.id)," he said.

The perpetrators then optimized the appearance of the website that had been defacing with the SEO (search engine optimization), so that the website appeared on the first page of the Google search engine.

These sites are then leased to online gambling players in Cambodia with varying rental rates, between Rp. 3 million to Rp. 20 million per day per site.

As a result of his actions, the perpetrator was charged with Article 45 paragraph 3 in conjunction with Article 27 paragraph 2 of the Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 1 of 2024 concerning the second amendment to Law Number 11 of 2008 concerning Electronic Information and Transactions, and or Article 303 of the Criminal Code concerning gambling, with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
