JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan was one of the speakers at the Zero Carbon City International Forum, which was organized by the Institute For Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) online.

In the international forum which was also attended by the Mayor of Yokohama, Japan, as well as representatives of various cities in the world, Anies exhibited a number of awards he had won some time ago.

In his remarks, Anies explained that currently, Jakarta is trying to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50 percent in 2030, until it reaches zero emissions by 2050.

“Jakarta is working to fulfill its commitment to become a resilient city, and now we have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 26 percent. We will continue to work on this until the target is met, even exceeded," said Anies in the forum, Wednesday, March 17.

Anies explained that the efforts to reduce gas emissions were being carried out. He formed a climate task force in 2020, which consists of various stakeholders including public institutions, private entities, non-governmental organizations, and universities.

In addition, Anies has also developed a low emission zone or by transforming the public transportation sector. So, Anies finally received an award for sustainable transportation.

"We have changed the paradigm of car-oriented city development into transit-oriented development by integrating the mass public transportation system until finally we were awarded the 2020 Sustainable Transport Award," he said.

Anies admitted that efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions were helped by the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though it has had a bad impact on the health sector, the pandemic has actually made Jakarta out of the top 10 congested cities in the world.

"The release of Jakarta as the top 10 most congested cities in the world according to the TomTom Traffic Index, thus directly improving air quality in Jakarta," he said.
