Italian Apparel Manufacturer OVS Suspends Business With Myanmar Suppliers

JAKARTA - The well-known clothing manufacturer from Italy, OVS, has announced that they will maintain their presence in Myanmar, although it is limited. However, it will stop business with Myanmar suppliers. This announcement was made on Monday.

The termination of this business cooperation was carried out due to suppliers who acted in a discriminatory manner against workers who were involved in the action against the coup of the Myanmar military regime.

"Given the modest size of production at present (in Myanmar), OVS could easily leave the country. But we will still be present, but limited, reported by Reuters.

The Italian clothing company did not say how much business it has with suppliers in Myanmar.

"(OVS) will suspend any activity with suppliers that discriminate against workers involved in protests", the statement added.

Myanmar is known globally for their yarn, fabrics, and textile products. The garment industry is the main source of employment in the Thousand Pagoda Country.

The OVS said it condemns human rights abuses in Myanmar and will monitor the situation in the country, where violence has escalated after the overthrow of the Win Myint and Aung San Suu Kyi governments in the Myanmar military regime's coup on February 1.

Earlier, Sweden's H&M, the world's second-largest apparel retailer, and Italy's Benetton last week announced the immediate suspension of new orders from Myanmar.

As of Monday 15 March, the death toll from the anti-coup demonstrations by the Myanmar military had reached 183 people, hundreds were injured and 2.156 others were detained.
