JAKARTA - President Mahmoud Abbas thanked the people, government and parliament of Slovenia, after the country recognized the Palestinian State, while speaking with Prime Minister Robert Golob by telephone.

The Slovenian parliament on Tuesday agreed on the Palestinian State's recognition in a unanimous vote, although the far-right opposition group of the Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) left parliament.

"This move complements Slovenia's previous stance in supporting international law and legitimacy as well as the rights of the Palestinian people to freedom and independence," President Abbas said.

President Abbas further said the stance gave hope to the Palestinian people regarding the opportunity to stop Israeli destruction and aggression.

"This attitude gives hope for the Palestinian people to achieve peace in accordance with international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Pre-Corruption, which leads to the realization of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital," said President Abbas.

On that occasion, President Abbas also urged all European countries that have not recognized the Palestinian State, to follow and support the Palestinian efforts to become a full member of the United Nations.

In addition, he also reiterated the need to stop the ongoing Israeli aggression against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

President Abbas also reiterated the need for a full withdrawal of occupation troops from across the Gaza Strip, followed by increased distribution of aid to Gaza to avoid the risk of starvation facing the community, along with Israeli controls and blockades.

Meanwhile, Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob reiterated his country's deep confidence in the rights of the Palestinian people, to determine their own destiny and achieve peace under international law.

"The Slovenian decision to recognize the Palestinian State will contribute in providing hope for peace," he said, reaffirming his call for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and distributing aid to the Palestinian people.

Prior to recognition by parliament, the Slovenian Government first recognized the Palestinian State on Thursday last week, following in the footsteps of Spain, Ireland, and Norway, although it drew strong criticism from Israel.

The government of Slovenia then raised the Palestinian flag beside the flag of Slovenia and the European Union in front of its building in the center of Ljubljana City.
