Surya Paloh Accepts Constitutional Court Decision Although Not In Accordance With Expectations: Consequences Of Democracy

JAKARTA - The Constitutional Court (MK) rejected Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar and Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD's petition in the 2024 presidential election dispute case.

Chairman of the NasDem Party, Surya Paloh, admitted that he accepted the Constitutional Court's decision even though it did not match the expectations of the party that brought Anies-Muhaimin in this election.

"The struggle must not stop. It must also not feel minimized because there is a decision that is not in line with our expectations. This is a consequence of democracy," said Surya at MasDem Tower, Central Jakarta, Monday, April 22.

For Surya, the Constitutional Court's decision to reject the two candidate pairs' lawsuit is final and binding on all legal stages. Thus, it is appropriate to respect the decision.

"The state has all the models and systems that we must agree on together as a state of law. This is an important judicial decision. So, it's natural that all of us should be like closing old books, and opening new books," he explained.

It is known that the Constitutional Court rejected Anies-Muhaimin's request as well as Ganjar-Mahfud. The court considered that the arguments submitted by the applicant were not based on law.

The rejected application was to cancel the results of the 2024 presidential election, to disqualify Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka, and to re-vote.

"Reject the applicant's application in its entirety," said Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court Suhartoyo when reading the verdict.

However, the three Constitutional Court judges expressed different opinions or dissenting opinions on this decision, namely Saldi Isra, Enny Nurbaningsih, and Arief Hidayat.

The three of them view that the request should be partially granted, as well as re-voting on a number of areas deemed problematic.
