JAKARTA - The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) condemns various violent incidents in Papua, including the murder of the Military Rayon Commander (Danramil) 1703-04/Aradide in Paniai olegh Regency TPNPB-OPM.

Komnas HAM chairman Atnike Nova Sigiro said violence must be stopped immediately in Papua. This is because the victims are not only members of the TNI and Polri but also civilians and even children.

"Komnas HAM condemns all forms and acts of violence that often occur in Papua," said Atnike in a written statement, Sunday, April 14.

Atnike highlighted the various violence that occurred on Earth of Cendrawasih in addition to the murder of Danramil Aradide in Paniai Regency. Among them were sexual violence against two women in Nabire to a shootout between the TNI-Polri and an armed separatist group (KSB) in Sugapa District, Intan Jaya Regency from March 1 to April 8 which resulted in the death of a child civilian.

"These cases show that anyone can become a victim due to the conflict and violence that occurred in Papua," he said.

Komnas HAM asked for the case of violence to be handled immediately by law enforcement officials. However, the process must be carried out in a transparent and accountable manner.

In addition, Komnas HAM also urged an evaluation of the handling of armed violence in Papua. This step can be taken from the level of operation, command, to security control.

"Komnas HAM encourages the government, including the TNI and Polri, to always use a measurable approach in dealing with conflict and violence in Papua. This is important to ensure the safety and protection of human rights of residents as well as TNI and Polri officers who work in the field," said Atnike.

Atnike said that his party would also conduct a referral study on laws and regulations to change the mention of armed criminal groups (KKB) into the Free Papua Organization (OPM). He also asked the government to provide the best public service for the people in Papua to suppress the escalation of conflict and violence.

"Komnas HAM will continue to monitor the development of the human rights situation in Papua," he said.

As previously reported, Lieutenant Inf Oktavianus Sogarlay, who was Danramil 1703-04/Aradide, died as a result of attacks and shootings by TPNPB-OPM. He died during an attack and shooting on Thursday, April 11.
