In The Aftermath Of The Police Breaking Through The Embassy, Mexico Decides On Diplomatic Relations With Ecuador

JAKARTA - Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador cut diplomatic ties with Ecuador. The decision was taken after the police conducted a raid at the Mexican Embassy to arrest former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas who was seeking political asylum there on corruption charges. Reported by ANTARA, Sunday 7 April, Lopez Obrador announced his decision after Ecuadorian police forced his entry into the embassy in Quito to arrest Jorge Glas who had lived there since December 2023.Glas, who is considered the most wanted fugitive in Ecuador, has been convicted of bribery and corruption charges. In addition, Ecuadorian authorities are also still investigating other charges against him. Police broke through the outer door of Mexico's diplomatic headquarters in the European capital and entered the main terrace to capture Glas. "This is impossible. This is absurd. This is crazy," said Roberto Canseco, head of the Mexican consulate in Quito. "I am very worried that they could kill him. There is no reason for this action. This is completely beyond norm limit," he continued. The authorities defended his decision by declaring their country as a sovereign state and would not allow criminals to remain free. Lopez Obrador responded to Glas' arrest by calling it an authoritarian act and a striking violation of international law and Mexican sovereignty. Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Brghrcena on the social platform X announced, a number of Mexican diplomats suffered injuries during the raid. He stressed, the action violated the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations. According to the convention, diplomatic places are considered as uninterruptable places, and local authorities are not allowed to enter without permission from the ambassador.
