JAKARTA - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) or KAI reminds all prospective passengers, especially passengers of the Lebaran season regarding the prohibition of smoking on trains.

KAI has issued rules for not smoking on trains since 2012.

"All train trips are a smokeless journey. They are not allowed to smoke across a series of trains, including inside the train, toilet, or at the railroad border," said KAI Vice President Public Relations Joni Martinus in his statement, Thursday, March 21, quoted by Antara.

Joni explained that the warning of the prohibition of smoking on trains was made through the announcement of audio and stickers on train walls. For passengers caught violating the smoking ban, they are considered not to heed the warning and will be lowered at the first opportunity.

"However, if in conditions of train travel there are no warnings, passengers caught smoking on the train will be warned by officers. If the passenger concerned does not heed or smoke again, it will be lowered at the first opportunity," he said.

The regulation on the prohibition of smoking on trains imposed by KAI is a derivative of the joint regulation of the Minister of Health and the Minister of Home Affairs regarding guidelines for implementing the area without smoking in 2011 and Law Number 36 of 2009 concerning Health.

KAI noted that in 2023, 115 passengers were taken down because they were caught smoking on the train. As for March 2024, KAI has deployed 25 passengers who violate smoking rules on trains.

KAI has provided smoking areas at stations located at points somewhat far from the general passenger position. Thus, those who smoke will be given special space, but the majority of station spaces are free from cigarette smoke.

"The application of the regulation on the prohibition of smoking on trains is a form of support for the government to provide an area without smoking on public transportation. KAI is committed to providing rail transportation during the Lebaran transportation period safely, comfortably, and healthily so that it is realized cheerful and meaningful homecoming," said Joni.

Meanwhile, based on data monitoring on Thursday at 08.00 WIB, medium/long distance train tickets sold in the period D-10 (March 31) to D+10 (April 21), were 1,653,633 tickets or 50 percent of the total tickets provided were 3,320,534 tickets.

KAI said the number of tickets sold would continue to increase as sales were still ongoing.
