JAKARTA - The Archbishop of Jakarta, Ignatius Cardinal Suharyo, raised the problem of stunting after the Christmas Mass at the Cathedral Church, Sawah Besar, Central Jakarta, on Monday, December 25, 2023.

He said that during a visit to the Cilincing and Tanjung Priok areas, he found someone named Petrus who was responsible and served the area.

Ignatius Cardinal said that in the field he found a stunting case, but parents allowed their children to be malnourished in order to get social assistance (bansos).

"It turns out that stunting is not easy. It turns out that not a few in these discoveries, these families deliberately do not provide proper food assistance for stunting children to those who are entitled," said Ignatius cardinal at the Cathedral Church, Sawah Besar, Central Jakarta, on Monday 25 December 2023.

"The reason is that children continue to be stunted, remain thin, remain malnourished, so that various types of social assistance are still received," continued the Cardinal.

The Jakarta Archbishop suggested that the solution to overcome stunting should not only provide food but must also be accompanied by education and coaching.

For your information, stunting is a lack of nutritional intake during the child's growth period. Many do not realize that the high rate of children can be a sign of chronic nutrition problems.
