Want Donald Trump To Leave The 2024 US Presidential Election Competition, Republican Senator: He Will Lose To Joe Biden

JAKARTA - A prominent member of the United States Senate from the Republican Party said former President Donald Trump had to leave the competition for the 2024 US Presidential Election from the party, saying he would lose to the Democratic Party's strongest candidate, incumbent Joe Biden.

Senator Bill Cassidy, one of the seven Senate members of the Republican Party who voted to impeach Trump at the impeachment trial of the two former presidents in 2021, described the case of federal documents that befell Trump as "almost like a SlamIGN", warning voters would not vote for someone proven to have committed a crime as president.

When asked if Trump should leave the presidential election, the Republican politician from Louisiana told CNN's "State of the Union" program: "I think so. But, of course, it's up to him. I mean, you're just asking my opinion. But he will lose to Joe Biden, if you look at the current poll," as reported by Reuters on August 21.

Cassidy, a Republican, known for his bipartisan deal, played a major role in drafting a $1 trillion infrastructure bill by 2021.

Trump himself is the leading presidential candidate of the Republican Party, despite facing legal issues covering four criminal charges, one of which is related to the handling of classified US documents after he left the White House in 2021.

"We may have a presidential candidate who has been convicted of a crime. I think Joe Biden needs to be replaced, but I don't think Americans will choose someone who has ever been convicted. So, I am very sorry for everything that happened," said Cassidy.

In the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll released this month, Trump won 47 percent of Republican votes nationwide, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis down six percentage points from July to just 13 percent.

No other candidate will attend the party's first debate on Wednesday which crossed the single digit.

Trump himself is expected to miss the debate. Instead, he will have an online interview with former Fox News host, Tucker Carlson.
