Indonesia itself had a history of a fairly memorable referendum, namely when the government under Habibie's leadership gave the choice for East Timor, between regional autonomy and remains part of Indonesia or independence and is free from Indonesia.

The East Timor Referendum was then held on August 30, 1999, organized as well as monitored by the UNAMENT. At that time, the referendum was attended by 450,000 registered people to vote. As a result, Timor chose its own independence.
