BANDA ACEH - The Aceh Police have named an inmate of the Class IIA Banda Aceh Penitentiary (Lapas) with the initials TD as a suspect in the alleged case of spreading the video of the burning of the Red and White flag on social media.

The Head of Public Relations of the Aceh Police, Commissioner Winardy, said that TD, a resident of Pidie Jaya, Aceh, is a convict in a narcotics abuse case.

"TD was named a suspect for spreading the video of the burning of the Red and White flag on social media. The information that was distributed was a hoax and could cause unrest and division in the community", said Commissioner Winardy in Banda Aceh, as reported by ANTARA, Friday, August 26.

TD is suspected of spreading the video of the burning of the red and white flag through his Facebook account during the commemoration of the 77th Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia, Wednesday, August 17.

The video of the burning of the flag was first uploaded to a Facebook account allegedly belonging to someone with the initials NU on the same day. Furthermore, the burning video was re-uploaded by TD's Facebook account.

"The results of the investigation show that NU is a resident of Pidie, Aceh, who received political asylum and is now domiciled in Horsens, Denmark", said Commissioner Winardy.

Based on the results of the investigation, TD deliberately spread the video of the burning of the flag because he refused to commemorate the 77th Anniversary of Indonesian Independence and wanted Aceh to be separated from the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.

For his actions, TD was charged with Article 45a Paragraph (2) in conjunction with Article 28 Paragraph (2) of Law No. 11 of 2008, which was changed to Law of Republic of Indonesia 19 of 2016 concerning electronic information and transactions.

TD is suspected of intentionally and without rights spreading information aimed at causing hatred or hostility to certain individuals and/or community groups based on ethnicity, religion, race, and intergroup (SARA).

"The threat is a maximum sentence of six years in prison and a fine of IDR 1 billion. In this case, the police have secured evidence, including mobile phones, Facebook accounts, and videos of the arson. The suspect TD is currently still in Banda Aceh prison", said Commissioner Winardy.
