Recovered And Allowed To Go Home From Hospital, Brazilian President Bolsonaro Must Undergo Special Diet

JAKARTA - Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro was released from hospital on Wednesday after undergoing two days of treatment for intestinal obstruction, his latest health complication from a 2018 stabbing.

"Departed now. Thank you all," the far-right Brazilian leader posted on Twitter alongside a message and a photo of himself giving doctors a thumbs up, citing Reuters Jan. 5.

The doctor treating President Bolsonaro, Antonio Macedo, told reporters the president had recovered and was ready to work, adding the Brazilian leader would be on a special diet over the weekend.

In addition, President Bolsonaro is also not allowed to do strenuous physical activity. Macedo admitted that the president could experience new intestinal disorders in the future.

President Bolsonaro, who has been in power since 2019 and plans to run for re-election in a presidential election scheduled for October this year, said he would maintain his regular agenda, including a trip to Russia in February.

He was on vacation in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina when he was rushed to Sao Paulo's Vila Nova Star hospital in the early hours of Monday after suffering from stomach pain.

The president said on Twitter on Monday he started feeling unwell Sunday after lunch, noting it was his second hospitalization "with similar symptoms" in months. In July 2021, he was taken to the Vila Nova Star facility due to an intestinal blockage after suffering from chronic hiccups.

Doctors who treated him inserted a nasogastric tube and briefly considered surgery, but the blockage cleared on Tuesday.

A medical bulletin issued late Tuesday said the president's digestive tract was showing signs of recovery, that he was fine on a liquid diet and that doctors had removed the nasogastric tube.

To note, President Bolsonaro has undergone a series of emergency operations after being stabbed during a campaign rally in September 2018.
