Indonesian Navy Personnel Rescue Dugongs Stranded On Makassar's Jalaria Beach

MAKASSAR - Indonesian Navy personnel rescued dugongs that were stranded on Jalaria Beach, Naval Main Base (Lantamal) VI, Makassar, South Sulawesi by returning the mammals to the deep sea.

"TNI AL personnel in Makassar have succeeded in rescuing the dugongs that were stranded on Jalaria Beach Naval Main Base VI," said Commander of the Naval Main Base VI Headquarters Detachment (Dandenma) Major (Mar) Awan Suryawan, Opsla TNI AL personnel in Makassar, quoted by Antara, Thursday, November 25.

He said the sighting of the stranded dugong was found by Indonesian Navy personnel during routine beach cleaning in the morning.

This dugong rescue is dramatic and takes about an hour.

The Indonesian Navy personnel had to work hard to save the dugongs and then they were herded into the deep sea.

After going through a fairly difficult process, he said, the rescue of the dugong was finally successful and it was confirmed that the dugong was still alive, even though it looked weak because it was injured due to being trapped in a shallow sea and crashing into a reef.

Indonesian Navy soldiers tried their best to help carry out the rescue by herding into the deep sea so that the fish could be free and continue their lives.

According to him, the Navy personnel who managed to save the dugong was Corporal Edison, who was assisted by civil servant Safar Aliyuddin.

"Both are members of the Makassar Maintenance and Repair Facility (Fasharkan)," said Awan Suryawan.
