Nissan Stops GT-R Production For North America Starting October

JAKARTA - Bad news for fans of the Nissan GT-R model in North America. The reason is, this high-performance sports car will be stopped production for the regional market in October, and this will potentially spread to other regions.

As a farewell to the North American market, Nissan offers two types with limited numbers, namely Takumi and Skyline Specials. Both types have been sold in the Japanese market, as reported by Carscoops, Saturday, June 15.

Prices for both types have been set with Skyline Edition variants worth 131,090 US dollars (Rp 2.1 billion) and T-Spec Takumi Edition with a tag of 151,090 US dollars (Rp 2.4 billion). Both are expected to arrive at the official dealer network in the summer and will be available at less than 200 units in the region.

However, Nissan is working to keep this legendary series. The manufacturer has repeatedly hinted at the emergence of its successor and is likely to be present in a pure EV with the GT-R badge.

"Nissan is now very focused on the future and the next era with interesting performance innovations," Nissan wrote in a statement.

Recently, Senior Vice President and Chief Planning Officer Africa, Middle East, India, Europe, and Oceania Francois Bailly, said that his party was very enthusiastic about the development of the latest GT-R generation, but he did not want to provide confirmation of the launch because the manufacturer wanted to build a car that would satisfy the public.

"The question is when can those cars move to EVs? And that's back to technology. We need to develop the blocks to make more sense," said Bailly.

Nevertheless, Bailly ensured that this latest model would be fully developed in order to meet the expectations of sports car lovers.

"We will not make GT-R half-hearted, that's not the intention. So, when it launches' is a difficult question," added Bailly.

It is likely that Nissan GT-R's successor will be one of the models that carries solid-state battery technology which effectively offers long distances but with lighter weights and faster charging. Thus, the car is likely to debut in 2028.

The latest generation of GT-R is expected to take on the basis of the Hyper Force concept car exhibited at the Japan Mobility Show at the end of last year with an aggressive and beautiful design.
