Winston Churcill's Resignation Announced On History Today, 5 April 1955

JAKARTA - On April 5, 1955, it was announced that the British Prime Minister (PM) Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill resigned. It is known that the resignation was triggered by Churcill's health which continued to deteriorate.

Churcill is known as the British leader who guided Great Britain and the Allies through the crisis of World War II. Quoting the BBC, Monday, April 5, 2021, the news was announced in a statement from Buckingham Palace.

The caption states: His Excellency Sir Winston Churchill holds a meeting with the Queen this evening and submits his resignation as Prime Minister and First Head of the Treasury, which Your Excellency graciously accepts.

Churchill's resignation was followed by a dinner event held at 10 Downing Street attended by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. The dinner was also attended by a number of former and current prime minister government colleagues.

Churcill who was then 80 years old was replaced by Anthony Eden. Churcill's resignation immediately spread throughout the world and the leaders shared messages and impressions about Churcill.

Blood, toil, tears and sweat

Churchill's political career began in 1900 as a Conservative MP for Oldham. But in 1906, disillusioned with his party, Churchill defected to the Liberal Party.

He first became prime minister and returned to the Conservative Party in 1940 and led a wartime coalition government during World War II. During that time, Churcill inspired courage throughout the British nation even though he promised nothing but "blood, toil, tears and sweat".

After the war, the coalition government dissolved and Winston Churchill resigned from the post of British Prime Minister on May 23, 1945. Churchill was then asked by the King to form a new government and his second term as prime minister, this time as an interim government.

However, Churchill, although regarded as a great wartime leader, he also fell out of favor in peacetime. In the general elections held in July 1945, Churcill lost badly.

The Labor government, led by Clement Attlee, took power. However, in 1951, Churchill was once again Prime Minister of England, at the age of 77 years.

In 1953, Churchill was given the title 'Knight of the Order of the Garter' in recognition of his services to the country. January 1965, Churchill died at his home in London.

A state funeral was carried out. Almost the whole world paid homage. Churchill is buried in the family grave in the grounds of Bladon Church, Oxfordshire.

Regardless of whether he was hated or liked, after his death, Winston Churchill remained known as a romantic and realist with an extraordinary sensitivity to tactical considerations. All of this happened at the same time as how he adhered to his strategic goals.

Churcill was known as a strong patriot and a staunch warrior. Even in the transition from war to peace, a phase in which other leaders often stumble, he reveals, at an advanced age, a capacity for learning and conformity that is in many ways superior to his younger peers.
