Demi Lovato Identifies Herself As Non-Binary, What Does It Mean?

JAKARTA - Pop singer Demi Lovato announced that she is a non-binary and changed her call with 'they', not 'she' (she's for women). The 28-year-old singer revealed that this happened after a long period of self-reflection.

Lovato, who suffered a drug overdose that nearly took her life in 2018, also admitted to being pansexual while appearing on Joe Rogan's podcast last March.

"Every day we wake up, we are given another opportunity and opportunity to be who we want and want to be," Lovato wrote in her caption on Instagram.

"I have spent most of my life growing up in front of all of you... You have seen the good, the bad, and everything in between."

"Not only has my life been a journey for myself, but I have also lived for those on the other side of the camera."

"Today is a day where I am so happy to share more about my life with all of you – I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary and will officially change my pronouns to them in the future."

"This happened after I underwent a cure (from an overdose) and reflected on myself. I'm still learning and being myself, and I don't claim to be an expert or a spokesperson."

"Sharing this with you now opens up another level of vulnerability for me. I do this for those out there who haven't been able to share who they really are with their loved ones."

What does it mean to be non-binary?

The idea of 'man' or 'woman' is a pretty clear concept to understand. However, some people have a gender that mixes elements of both or completely different.

Some do not identify with one gender, while others find that their gender changes over time.

In particular, people who don't see themselves as male or female refer to themselves as non-binary.

It should be noted that most transgender people, for example, are not non-binary because they have a male or female gender.

Intersex people are also not necessarily non-binary, as they usually identify themselves as male or female.
