Barbie Aaliyah Dolls For IDR 900 Thousand Sold In A Short Time

JAKARTA - The latest Barbie doll released in honor of legendary singer Aaliyah was sold out in no time. The doll was launched by Mattel Creations on January 16, 2025, to coincide with the 46th anniversary of the late R&B singer.

It is known, in 2001, the late Aaliyah, whose full name is Aaliyah Dana Haughton, died in a tragic plane crash at the age of 22.

This doll is designed to resemble Aaliyah, complete with black crop top, black trousers, gloves, sunglasses, and shoes, inspired by the Aaliyah costume in the 1996 song's music video titled "One In A Million".

This doll's hair is also arranged with Aaliyah's signature side, which is familiar with the nickname 'Babygirl'. This doll is part of Mattel's latest series, Music Series Doll.

"The soft vocals of Aaliyah and their innovative voices helped form R&B music in the 90s, and their influence on music and fashion is still being felt today," wrote Mattel's description of the Barbie doll, quoted by VOI from The Independent page on Friday, January 17, 2025.

"Our respect for the life and work of 'Babygirl' will be an extraordinary addition to any collection," he added.

This exclusive doll is sold on the MattelCreations.com site until 11:59 p.m. on January 16, and only members of the Barbie Club 59 can buy it there. The doll is also available in certain Target stores.

However, the doll, which sold for 55 US dollars or Rp900 thousand, has sold out on the MattelCreations.com site and also on the Target site.

The launch of the Barbie doll also involved Rashad Haughton, Aaliyah's brother. In an interview with Forbes, Rashad stated that launching this doll on Aaliyah's birthday was a perfect tribute.

The process took a long time to make sure everything was right, from sample to final design. It was an extraordinary process, but also full of challenges. Over time, we realized that this moment would fall at the perfect time. So, we decided to release it on my sister's birthday," he said.

"This is a celebration of his life, celebration of his legacy and doing so on his birthday, the day he was born into the world, feels very perfect." he added.

In August 2001, Aaliyah was on an overloaded chartered plane and crashed in the Bahamas. This incident killed himself, the pilot, and seven members of his team. A month before the incident, Aaliyah had just released her self-titled album.
