JAKARTA Alternative Film Project, a global nonprofit film initiative founded by inDrive, recently announced the winners of the 2024 edition of the Alternative Film Awards. The festival will be held until November 28 at Empire XXI, with free screenings of films and open discussions that attract the attention of many audiences.

In addition, the 'Industry Days' event which took place on November 27-29 at Artotel Suites Bianti, as well as the Award Night held at the UGM Innovation and Creativity Center (GIK) on November 29, became the culmination of a series of successful events.

The great success of this festival cannot be separated from the important role of Andjelka Jankovic, Head of Marketing and Communications at the Alternative Film Project. In an exclusive interview with VOI, Andjelka spoke about the vision and mission of Alternative Film Project, as well as how this festival provides a platform for filmmakers from Global South to compete on the international film stage.

Alternative Film Project is a non-profit organization focused on empowering filmmakers from countries in Global South, which are often marginalized in the international film industry.

"The alternative Film Project aims to vote on filmmakers from these countries and help them gain recognition in the world of global films. We want these films to be able to talk about important issues from their area and bring the message to the world screen," said Andjelka while visiting the VOI office in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta recently.

The film festival aims not only to showcase works of art, but also to have a real social impact.

"Initially we wanted these films to affect more than 1 million people by 2023, so that they could act in a better, more aware and more responsible way to the world around them," said Andjelka.

Alternative Film Project sees film as a very effective tool to achieve this social goal.

"Films are not just entertainment. Films are a means of educating, to raise awareness, and to influence positive changes. That's why we are so excited to support filmmakers who have an impact," he added.

One of the reasons why Yogyakarta was chosen as the location of the festival was because this city has a strong reputation as a cultural center in Indonesia.

"The arts and culture community in Yogyakarta is very strong. We see Yogyakarta as a cultural capital, a place where many people from all over Indonesia, even the world, come to experience and be part of this festival. This is the perfect place for Alternata Film Project because Yogyakarta has enormous appeal for filmmakers and audiences," he said.

By choosing Yogyakarta as the host, Alternata Film Project not only supports local filmmakers, but also prioritizes the importance of cultural and artistic diversity in the international film world.

"We want this festival to be a place where people can share stories, discuss and learn from each other. Here, we not only show films, but also build networks between filmmakers and audiences from various parts of the world," he explained.

Career Travel From Producer To Marketing

Andjelka started his career as a producer before finally turning to Head of Marketing and Communications.

"I work as a producer, but I feel that communication is my strength. I am good at speaking in public, building networks, and promoting projects. That's what eventually brought me to the world of marketing," he said.

As Head of Marketing and Communications at Alternative Film Project, Andjelka has a very important role in ensuring these projects are widely known.

"To become a leader in marketing, you must have strong leadership skills, experience in small projects, and the ability to deal with difficult situations. You must also understand the psychology of the audience and colleagues, and always follow the latest trends in the marketing world," said Andjelka.

Andjelka added that in this fast-paced world, it is important to continue to learn and adapt to change.

"Equalization and communication are areas that always change. Therefore, we must always hone our skills and knowledge to remain relevant," he said.

Maintain Work Balance And Personal Life

Andjelka also talked about the importance of maintaining a balance between work and personal life. If a person feels that he is working under pressure as marketing, according to him, the best way is to rest or take a break from the world of work.

"I know how to work under pressure, but I believe we need time to rest. Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, especially in the west, it's not always possible," he said.

However, Andjelka feels that the Indonesian people have a better approach in this regard.

"I think Indonesians are smarter in maintaining a balance between work and life. I hope to learn from you about how to do it better," he added.

In the future, Andjelka hopes that the Alternative Film Project can continue to grow and have a positive impact on Global South filmmakers.

"We want this project to continue providing platforms for new filmmakers, giving them the opportunity to talk about important issues, and bring their stories to the world screen," Andjelka said.

With the spirit to support filmmakers who have social impacts, Alternata Film Project is committed to creating changes through films.

"Films are a very powerful tool to bring change. We want to make sure that the films we support can be seen by millions of people and can affect the world in a positive way," concluded Andjelka.

Alternative Film Project continues to strive to provide space for filmmakers from around the world, raise their voices, and introduce works to the international world. With a clear vision and commitment to social impacts, Alternative Film Project is ready to become one of the most important powers in the world of global cinema.
