JAKARTA - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) noted the performance of goods transport which continues to grow positively by successfully transporting 5,557,833 tons of goods (unaudited) dominated by coal during the January 2025 period.
"The transportation of goods continues to grow positively. During the January 2025 period, KAI managed to transport 5,557,833 tons of goods, an increase compared to the same period in 2024 which reached 5,527,348 tons," said KAI VP Public Relations Anne Purba in Jakarta, quoted by Antara, Thursday, February 6.
He said that the increase was supported by additional travel and route frequencies, as well as optimization of coal carriages in the KAI Divre III Palembang and KAI Divre IV Tanjungkarang areas.
"This step is taken to meet the high demand for customers for coal transportation," he said.
He said that coal is the main commodity with a total transportation of 4,643,234 tons or 83.4 percent of the total transported goods.
Most of the centralized coal transportation in southern Sumatra, which plays an important role in supporting national energy supply. This figure shows an increase of 5.51 percent compared to January 2024 which reached 4,400,830 tons.
In addition to coal, other commodities also show positive growth, such as containers, fuel, and fertilizers, which have increased by between 5 percent and 7 percent.
"This shows that there is an increase in the need of economic actors in distributing their goods through rail transportation," said Anne.
In terms of timeliness, the operational performance of freight transport has also increased. In 2024, On Time Performance (OTP) departs to an average of 95.12 percent or an increase compared to the same period in 2023, which is 93.31 percent.
Meanwhile, the arrival OTP reached 90.18 percent, an increase from the average arrival timeliness in January 2023 which was 87.51 percent.
In addition to improving the performance of facilities such as the procurement of new trains, KAI has also increased the reliability of train infrastructure to support better OTP achievements.
To improve the reliability of infrastructure, KAI replaced rail pads from wood to synthetic in order to improve the safety and operational safety of trains. Components that were replaced into synthetic pads were wooden pads on the steel bridge construction.

Anne emphasized that with these various initiatives, KAI continues to be committed to supporting a more efficient and environmentally friendly logistics system.
He added that transportation of goods using trains provides many benefits, such as efficiency of logistics costs, reduction of congestion on roads, as well as suppressing pollution and road damage.
"This step is also part of KAI's contribution in increasing national economic competitiveness," said Anne.
