Minister Of Energy And Mineral Resources Reveals Implementation Of Cost Constrained CCS/CCUS

JAKARTA - Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Arifin Tasri revealed the challenges in implementing Carbon Capture and Storage/Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCS/CCUS) technology.

In fact, said Arifin, this technology is expected to play a key role in suppressing the country's carbon footprint, known as one of the largest emitters in the world.

Arifin said, although CCS/CCUS offers great potential in reducing carbon emissions, the high costs associated with its implementation are the main challenges for Indonesia.

"The CCS/CCUS implementation plan is still expensive, but we have to try something if we just try it, it's expensive," said Arifin, Tuesday, August 6.

Arifin explained, Indonesia has 15 CCS/CCUS projects that are still in the study or preparation stage spread from west to east of Indonesia, consisting of the EGR/CCUS Tangguh project, Abadi CCS, Sukowati CCUS/EOR, Gundih CCUS/EGR, CO2 Huff andwah Jatibarang Test Pilots, CCUS/EOR RAmba, CO2 Huff andwah Gemah, Sakakemang CCS, Arun CCS, Central Sumatra Basin CCS/CCUS Hubs, Kutai Basin CCS Hub, Asri Basin CCS/CCUS Hubs, CCU to Methanol RU V Balikpapan, East Kalimantan CCS/CCUS Study, and Blue Totalia + CCS Donggi Matindok.

In his presentation, Arifin said the cost of injecting per ton of CO2 in the CO2 storage project would cost a lot of money, including the following, firstly Natural Gas Purification, East Java Gundih at a cost of 43-53 US dollars per tonne of CO2, with a total of 0.3 million tons of CO2 per year, an investment in injection of 105 million US dollars.

Furthermore, Bintuni LNG Production, West Papua amounted to 33 US dollars per tonne of CO2. A total of 2.5-3.3 million tons of CO2 per year, injection investment of 948 million US dollars.

Then LNG production in Masela amounted to US$26 per tonne of CO2, a total of 3.5 million tons of CO2 per year, injection investment of US$1.4 billion.

Finally, coal gasification into DME, Tanjung Enim South Sumatra, 50-55 US dollars per tonne of CO2, a total of 3 million tons of CO2 per year and injection investments reached 1.6 billion US dollars.
