The Number Of Tourist Visits Reaches 1.14 Million To Indonesia In May 2024

JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted that foreign tourist visits (tourists) in May 2024 reached 1,145,499 visits. This figure increased by 7.36 percent compared to April 2024 and also increased by 20.11 percent when compared to May 2023 which was only 953,71 visits.

Acting Main Secretary of BPS Imam Machdi, explained that the number of foreign tourist visits in May 2024 through the main entrance was 987.70 thousand visits and border entrances were 157.80 thousand visits.

"The level of foreign tourist visits is getting closer to the pre-pandemic level in 2019. We can even see that visits through the main entrance are already higher than the conditions before the pandemic, namely in May 2019," he said at a press conference on Monday, July 1.

Imam said that foreign tourists visiting Indonesia in May 2024 were dominated by foreign tourists from Malaysia (17.47 percent), Australia (11.98 percent), and Singapore (9.69 percent).

Cumulatively, the total number of foreign tourist visits from January to May 2024 has reached 5,244,213 visits, or an increase of 23.78 percent when compared to the same period in 2023.

Imam said that the increase in this visit was mainly recorded at the airport gates of Ngurah Rai (Bali) and Soekarno-Hatta (Banten), an increase of 27.74 percent and 35.53 percent, respectively.

Meanwhile, the number of visits through the main entrance is dominated by foreign tourists with air transportation modes which contribute 84.61 percent, while foreign tourists with sea and land transportation modes are only 12.95 percent and 2.43 percent, respectively.

According to Imam, the number of foreign tourist visits until May 2024 is the highest in the last four years or since 2020.

Furthermore, Imam said that in May 2024, the most foreign tourist visits came from Malaysia, reaching 200.1 thousand visits, followed by Australia with 137.2 thousand visits, and Singapore with 111 thousand visits.
