JAKARTA - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) hopes that hydrogen can become one of the contributors to the energy transition in Indonesia.
"Hydrogen is expected to be one of the contributors to the energy transition and have an important role in decarbonizing the global energy system and as one of the government's main strategies in running the roadmap towards carbon neutral in 2060," said Acting Director General of New Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Jisman P Hutajulu quoted from ANTARA, Wednesday, February 21.
He explained that Indonesia has very large, spread, and diverse EBT potential with a total potential of 3,689 gigawatts (GW) from solar, bayu, hydro, bioenergy, geothermal, and also sea energy.
"It has the potential to be used in green hydrogen production as a backup or energy storage," said Jisman.
In addition, he said again, hydrogen can also be used in various sectors for the purpose of decarbonization in sectors that are impossible or difficult to reduce, such as long distance, shipping, aviation, steel production, industrial heating, and manufacturing transportation.
He said the main targets for hydrogen development in Indonesia are the achievement of the target of reducing emissions in the enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and net zero emissions (NZE) through the process of energy transition and decarbonization of the global energy system.
"To achieve this main target, Indonesia will develop hydrogen as an effort to support the development of EBT, decarbonization efforts for transportation and industry as well as commodities that can be exported," he also said.
The Indonesian government, said Jisman, will continue to encourage the national hydrogen ecosystem to be formed so that the development of strategic infrastructure that allows the involvement of various roles of all stakeholders can be created in order to achieve the hydrogen economy in Indonesia.
"This is important, yes. When the economic scale is not yet, of course we can't push it, but when the economic scale has been formed and the demand is large, then the trend of prices will decrease. That's the most important thing," said Jisman.
