These are Several Important Points from the Results of Indonesia's Bilateral Meeting with Vietnam

JAKARTA - Minister of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) Retno Marsudi conveyed several important points from the bilateral meeting between President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

Retno said Vietnam is Indonesia's strategic partner in Southeast Asia. Apart from being a fellow member of ASEAN, Vietnam is also an important trade partner and investment destination for Indonesia.

Apart from that, there are more than 32 Indonesian companies operating in Vietnam. Also, Vietnam is also a very important technology cooperation development partner.

Meanwhile, the two leaders agreed to intensify trade cooperation to continue to improve, especially trade targets, after the trade target of 10 billion US dollars which should be achieved in 2023 has been achieved in 2022.

The two leaders also agreed to take bilateral relations to a higher level by making detailed and concrete cooperation plans that benefit both parties.

Retno said that the two leaders also agreed to continue to increase trade as well as expand market access and reduce trade barriers

"To achieve this, the two leaders said that the future trade target is higher than 15 billion US dollars in 2028," said Retno in her official statement, quoted on Sunday, January 14, 2024.

Second, in the investment sector, Indonesia asks for Prime Minister Chinh's support to continue to encourage a conducive investment climate that prioritizes aspects of protecting investors, especially investors from Indonesia.

"Because, once again, there are many Indonesian investors who are already operating here. And this shows the president's partiality towards Indonesian investors who carry out activities abroad," added Retno.

Third, namely in the field of food security, Retno said that President Jokowi and Prime Minister Chinh agreed to encourage agricultural cooperation through strategic food commodity cooperation including research, quality control and smart farming.

Next, regarding fisheries cooperation. Where Indonesia appreciates the increase in fisheries exports to Vietnam to almost double in 2022.

"The President and PM Chinh also agreed on the importance of joint efforts to continue to encourage collaboration and investment, including for the advancement of the fishing industry and efforts to eradicate IUU fishing," said Retno.

Then regarding renewable energy cooperation. Retno said that Indonesia and Vietnam agreed that collaboration between ASEAN countries was crucial to achieving independence in this sector.

And finally, President Jokowi and Prime Minister Chinh also agreed to continue working together to complete ASEAN's homework, including resolving the crisis in Myanmar.
