Defense Minister Sjafrie Claims Revision Of TNI Law Does Not Violate Democracy And Civil Supremacy

JAKARTA - Minister of Defense (Menhan) Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin said changes to the TNI law proposed by the DPR RI were needed to provide a clearer legal basis for the role of the TNI.

"There is another task besides war without violating the principles of democracy and civil supremacy," said Sjafrie at a Working Meeting with Commission I of the DPR RI at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday, March 11, which was confiscated by Antara.

He also mentioned several targets in changes to the TNI law. First, strengthen the policy of modernizing the main weapon system (alutsista) and the domestic defense industry.

Second, clarifying the limits and mechanisms for the involvement of the TNI in non-military tasks. Third, improving the welfare of soldiers and social security for soldiers.

"Fourth, adjusting the provisions related to career leadership and retirement age according to organizational needs," he said.

Previously, the DPR RI Plenary Meeting approved the Draft Law on Amendments to Law Number 34 of 2004 concerning the Indonesian National Army (TNI) to be included in the 2025 Priority National Legislation Program (Prolegnas).

The discussion of the TNI Bill is proposed to enter the 2025 Priority Prolegnas based on the Presidential Letter of the Republic of Indonesia Number R12/Pres/02/2025 dated February 13, 2025. That way, the bill is also an initiative proposal from the government.
