Mahfud MD Always Agrees Corruptors Sentenced To Death

JAKARTA - Candidate for vice president (Cawapres) number 3 Mahfud Md said that he agreed with the idea of a death sentence for corruptors.

"I always say I agree that the corruptor will be sentenced to death," said Mahfud, Antara, Thursday, February 8.

However, Mahfud explained that there were 2 problems to impose the death penalty for corruptors in Indonesia. One of them, he said, was that there were conditions in Law Number 20 of 2001 concerning the Eradication of Criminal Acts of Corruption (Tipikor) which stated that the death penalty could only be given in crisis conditions.

"Even now, the law says that corruption carried out in a crisis can be sentenced to death. This is the current law, so it can be done," he said.

However, according to Mahfud, according to the Corruption Act, the requirement for the death penalty must be carried out in a crisis.

"Well, the crisis was not explained. What size of the crisis? If it's an economic crisis, what size is it, so that prosecutors don't dare to sue," he said.

Next, said Mahfud, is Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code (KUHP).

"Therefore, there are two problems now. One if we impose the death penalty, corruption, for example, which in certain amounts can be punishable by the death penalty even though it is not in a crisis situation, just crossed out the crisis. That can be done," he said.

According to Mahfud, currently with the new Criminal Code, the death penalty can be imposed. But when 10 years during his death sentence has not been executed and has good behavior, his sentence can be changed based on a court decision to life imprisonment.

Meanwhile, Mahfud promised to eradicate corruption in Indonesia to its roots.

"Well, this is also the current law. But let's organize everything in the future. Anyway, we have to eradicate this corruption to the roots," said Mahfud.
