Evernote Lays Off More Employees in the US and Moves Most of Its Operations to Europe

JAKARTA - The note-taking application Evernote has just laid off most of its employees based in Chile and the United States (US).

Acquired by Italian company Bending Spoons in November 2022, now most of Evernote's operations are brought to Europe.

"We took this step to increase operational efficiency and maximize the corporate brand Bending Spoons, which is very strong in Europe," said Evernote CEO, Francesco Patarnello in his announcement, quoted Monday, July 10.

"Unfortunately, this transition has required the majority of our employees based in Chile and the US to be laid off, and on July 5, a termination communication was made," he added.

Evernote has long been a indispensable note-taking app for many people and is well known for being present on every new Samsung smartphone, with the company's products still available worldwide.

Patarnello continued, employees affected by layoffs would be given severance pay in the form of a substantial separation package.

This package includes 16 weeks of salary, health insurance coverage for up to one year, and a performance bonus, which is paid out on a pro-rated basis as if year-end performance targets were met.

"We are also offering additional support to those in need, such as affected individuals who have visas," said Patarnello.

According to TechCrunch, the company previously laid off 129 workers this past February, which it claimed at the time that Evernote was unprofitable in the long term.

Going forward, said Patarnello, employees brought to Europe will continue to carry out their jobs at Evernote.

"This team will be in an ideal position to leverage the broad expertise and strengths of the more than 400 workforce at Bending Spoons, many of whom have worked full-time at Evernote since the acquisition," said Patarnello.
