JAKARTA - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday he would retain Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in light of the escalating security crisis, reversing a decision to fire the minister that sparked protests and heightened alarm abroad.
Prime Minister Netanyahu said they had resolved differences between the two over Gallant's public call last month to stop a judicial overhaul plan that was dividing the government and which Gallant considered to be a threat to Israel's security.
Last week, PM Netanyahu announced he would postpone the sacking.
"I have decided to forget our differences," PM Netanyahu said at a news conference Monday, according to Reuters, April 11.
PM Netanyahu further said the two had worked closely together over the last two weeks.
Late last month, Gallant was seen overseeing the launch of a new version of Israel's Ofek spy satellite into orbit in his capacity as defense minister, after Prime Minister Netanyahu's office earlier announced his dismissal.
When PM Netanyahu's office announced his dismissal, no other name was immediately announced as Gallant's replacement. He immediately wrote on Twitter: "The security of the state of Israel has always been and will always be my mission in life."
