JAKARTA - Facebook owner Meta announced on Wednesday May 3 that it has discovered malware spreaders taking advantage of public interest in ChatGPT to attract users to download malicious apps and browser extensions, which are similar to cryptocurrency scams.
Since last March, the social media company has found about 10 malware families and more than 1,000 malicious links promoted as tools featuring the popular artificial intelligence chatbot.
"In some cases, the malware provides a ChatGPT function that functions with harmful files," Meta said.
Speaking at a news conference on the report, Meta's Chief Information Security Officer, Guy Rosen, said that for the bad guys, "ChatGPT is a new cryptocurrency."

Rosen and other Meta executives say the company is preparing its defenses for potential abuse linked to generative AI technologies such as ChatGPT, which can quickly create human-like writing, music, and art.
MPs have highlighted the tools as a possibility of making online disinformation campaigns easier to implement.
Asked if a generating AI was already used in information operations, executives said it was too early, although Rosen said he expected "bad actors" would use the technology to "try to accelerate and possibly enlarge" their activities.
