Commission IX Of The House Of Representatives Highlights PMI's Digital Security, Not Wanting Indonesian Citizen Cases To Be Victims Of Scams Repeatedly
JAKARTA - Member of Commission IX of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Zainul Munasichin, asked the Government to ensure digital security for Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) following the large number of Indonesians being victims of scams and misuse of personal data abroad.
He demanded that the government seriously handle the case considering its very concerning condition.
"This is not just a matter of financial literacy. This is a matter of digital security and national protection for citizens abroad," Zainul told reporters, Wednesday, November 12.
According to Zainul, the rise of scam victims shows the weakness of the digital protection system against PMI.
"The government must not stop at the launch of the pocket book or socialization, but must build a concrete and integrated protection system," he said.
It is known, based on reports from the Financial Services Authority (OJK) and the Ministry of P2MI, a number of PMIs experienced cases where their personal data was used for illegal activities, such as online gambling and criminal acts of fraud, so some of them had to deal with local state law officials, even though they did not commit these crimes.
Zainul said that PMIs have contributed greatly to the national economy through remittances that reach hundreds of trillions of rupiah every year. Therefore, he considered, the protection of PMI's data and digital security must be a national priority.
"Negara tidak hanya memanfaatkan devisa dari PMI, tapi juga wajib memastikan data dan identitas mereka aman," katanya.

Zainul assessed that the Government needs to cooperate with the OJK, the Ministry of Manpower, the Ministry of P2MI, and Komdigi to create a cross-border data security mechanism.
The PKB legislator from the East Java electoral district also encourages increased digital capacity and protection through bilateral cooperation with placement countries, as well as the implementation of a biometric data verification and strong encryption system to prevent leakage.
"We must be present to protect them, both physically and digitally. Do not let PMI become a victim twice, abroad and in cyberspace," he concluded.
