Twitter Reviews the Permanent Ban on Policy Violating Accounts, Donald Trump Account Could Live Again

JAKARTA - Twitter Inc is reviewing its policy around permanently banning users. The Financial Times reported on Wednesday, October 12 that Twitter is likely to moderate its content in line with Elon Musk's vision for the social media platform.

Twitter has been exploring whether to create another content moderation tool that can replace bans, which have so far been the toughest punishments for breaking the rules.

Back in May, shortly after signing a $44 billion deal to buy Twitter, Musk had promised changes to the social media platform's content moderation practices.

Musk, who calls himself a free speech absolutist, also said he would lift the Twitter ban on former US President Donald Trump.

However, the FT report said any policy changes would not pave the way for Trump's return to the platform as Twitter was not considering lifting the ban it issued for violating its policies for an account inciting violence.

According to the report, employees looked for areas where they felt Twitter might have banned users for lesser offenses, such as sharing misleading information.

"Our core principles, choice and control, transparency, legitimacy and fairness, have guided our work for many years, and as the public conversation continues to evolve, so will our approach," a Twitter spokesperson told Reuters.

Most recently, Twitter restricted Kanye West's account over the weekend, saying it had removed the rapper's post which online users condemned as anti-Semitic.

Representatives for Donald Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters, suggesting the former president's account might be reinstated.
