Mark Zuckerberg Confirms Project Cambria Virtual Reality Headset Launches October 2022

JAKARTA - Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has confirmed that the next virtual reality headset from Meta will appear this October. Zuckerberg made a comment about this on the Joe Rogan podcast.

He also pointed out that the device, which is almost certainly a headset codenamed "Project Cambria", - will likely launch around the company's annual Connect event.

“For the next device coming out in October, there are some big features", said Zuckerberg, who discussed VR at the start of the podcast, as quoted by The Verge. He went on to describe the new social options that eye and face tracking would enable.

"The ability for now to have some kind of eye contact in virtual reality", Zuckerberg said as part of the feature list. "Have your face traced in such a way that your avatar, it's not just this stationary object, but if you smile or if you frown or if you frown, or whatever your expression is, it will translate that in real-time to your avatar."

That's consistent with what we know about Project Cambria, which was supposed to have a high-resolution color display, built-in sensors for eye tracking, and advanced augmented reality passthrough.

As Bloomberg reported last month, leaked code suggests the device could be called the Meta Quest Pro. Whatever the name, the Cambria will sit alongside the lower-end Meta Quest, although Meta is reportedly already planning the next generation of both headsets. This separates from the nascent line of augmented reality glasses Meta.

Cambria is supposed to be "significantly" more expensive than the existing Quest, which recently got a price increase to $399. Meta has previously stated that the device will be released sometime this year.
