JAKARTA - Left behind with some of its competitors in terms of the transition to electrification, Mazda remains committed to presenting more electric vehicles (EVs) in the future.

According to rumors, the Japanese manufacturer is preparing a new EV model and it is rumored that the car will launch in the US in early 2025.

Reporting from Nikkei Asia, Jum'at, October 13, the model will be assembled in Japan and exported to Uncle Sam's country. This is called a bold move because EVs do not qualify for federal tax credit in the region, although there is a gap to pass it.

Although the information obtained is still very limited regarding the emergence of the latest model, it is estimated that the car that will be present will later carry the existing model in the form of an SUV or crossover.

This is reinforced by what was revealed by Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro some time ago. He said that his party was looking for segments that would attract potential EV buyers. Currently, the segment that customers are targeting is large-dimensional cars.

"It's hard to make money by making small electric vehicles given the high cost of car production," said Moro.

This is a gamble from Mazda after the manufacturer stopped selling from its first electric car, the MX-30 in the US. Currently, Mazda relies on hybrid models, such as CX-50 Hybrid, CX-70 PHEV, and CX-90 PHEV.

The reason why the MX-30 was stopped is in the US thanks to its achievements that have not improved. Since its launch in September 2021, a total of 571 units have been sold in the US. Of course, this is inversely proportional to the sale of hybrid vehicles.

Mazda MX-30 uses a synchronous AC-type permanent electric motor with a power of 143 dk, as well as a front-wheel drive and direct-drive transmission system.

This vehicle is equipped with a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 32 kWh which is liquidly cooled and only covers a distance of up to 161 km in one charge. This figure is relatively low compared to its competitors. Mazda MX-30 is sold for 34,110 US dollars or around Rp517.7 million.
