Synopsis Of The Fablemans Movie, An Inspirational Story From Director Steven Spielberg's Childhood

JAKARTA - The Fabelmans will be released in theaters on November 23, 2022. This movie is inspired by the childhood story of Hollywood director Steven Spielberg. The complexities within his family are the focus of the film.

Spielberg wrote it with Tony Kushner, telling the story of a character named Sammy Fabelman who begins to fall in love with movies when his parents take him to the cinema.

Starting from his curiosity and creativity to recreate an unforgettable scene in The Greatest Show on Earth, Sammy started making works with the camera his parents gave him.

Starting from realizing his imagination and fantasies by using amateur actors, namely his two younger sisters, Sammy started making exciting films about war with his friends at school.

For the scene when Sammy films himself as a child, Spielberg reconstructed what he made when he was young, but the camera angles were made better. Sammy made a short film with his Scout friends and made his school bully the main star in a film to deal with his own fears.

Carefully, Sammy experimented when editing films manually when technology was not as sophisticated as it is today. However, everything is lived happily even though what he loves is only considered a hobby by his genius father.

As his love of movies grew, along with tumultuous teenage years faced with anti-Semitism, he found trouble in his family.

The Fablemans stars Gabriel LaBelle, Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, and Oakes Fegley.

As reported by Reuters in early November, November 9, Oakes Fegley who was a bully at Sammy's school, Chad Thomas, said what made this film so important to Spielberg and audiences was because it was the first film based on the director's life.

"He brought elements of his personality not only into the process of making films, but also into the story," said Fegley as quoted by ANTARA, Monday, November 21.

Michelle Williams, who plays Mitzi Fabelman, Sammy's mother, explained that her character sees each of her children as different individuals.

"She saw something different and extraordinary about her son (Sammy) and while it could make the family look different, she accepted and encouraged it," said Williams.

Steven Spielberg already had an idea that Michelle Williams would be suitable as the free-spirited and artistic character Mitzy, a character inspired by his mother, ever since watching Williams act in Blue Valentine.

During shooting, the cast of "The Fablemans" had access to video footage and view old photos of the Spielberg family to get a deeper understanding of their roles.

According to Spielberg, before he died his parents had asked him to perpetuate their family story on the big screen.

"I started to think, if I had to make a film that I've never done, something personal, what would it be? And there's only one story I want to tell."
