JAKARTA – Former world number one Serena Williams and seven-time Formula 1 (F1) world champion Lewis Hamilton are reportedly interested in joining Chelsea. They will become investors in an effort to acquire the Blues.

This information was conveyed by a source close to the Reuters news agency. Serena and Hamilton are said to be joint ventures in a consortium with Martin Broughton to buy the reigning European Champions League champions.

Broughton is a former Liverpool boss. Not only Broughton, Serena and Hamilton, President of World Athletics Sebastian Coe and several wealthy investors from around the world will also join forces in the consortium to save the London club.

Additionally, private equity veterans Josh Harris and David Blitzer also backed the bid from Broughton. Both men were owners of the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team that competed in the American Basketball League (NBA).

Williams and Hamilton reportedly will contribute funds each fund of 10 million pounds, approximately IDR 185 billion.

Hamilton's representatives later confirmed that the 37-year-old had joined Broughton's bid. However, the person concerned stated that the nominal quoted in the report was inaccurate without disclosing any details.

Previously, Serena Williams had been an investor in Los Angeles Angel City FC. The club plays in the National Women's Soccer League.

The final bid for Chelsea will be made earlier this month. Other investors on the list to buy the English Premier League club are LA Dodgers owner Todd Boehly and Boston Celtics Steve Pagliuca.

A consortium led by the owners of the Chicago Cubs, the Ricketts family, withdrew from competition for the Blues. Later, the sale of Chelsea will be overseen by the US bank Raine Group.
